home for life

I spent some time volunteering with the Home for Life Animal Sanctuary in Wisconsin this past week. This is a wonderful place where animals who cannot, for whatever reason, find a forever home, go to live a quality life with the care they need. There are many elderly and disabled cats and dogs, plus rabbits, birds, a goat and a tortoise. Birth defects, abuse, neglect, blind, deaf, psychological and behavior issues, all are welcome at Home for Life. Animals are separated into different group and individual areas, all with comfortable bedding, indoor/outdoor access, great food and attention. The Home for Life animals enjoy a quality life, where they can be themselves, run and play, and be loved and cherished for as long as they live. I went out to photograph the animals, for photos to be sent out in sponsor packets. It was wonderful and heartbreaking all at the same time. As I was going through and editing the photos, it was my first chance to really look at some of them (outside of the whirlwind of photographs from that day) and see how beautiful they are. They just want love and pets like every other dog or cat, and Home for Life gives that every day.

A quick note about this girl….she was born without half of her brain, and while she could walk a bit, she mostly could only spin in circles :(

There are so many wonderful and loving animals here, and they need continuous help to keep up with food, vet care, cleaning and employees to give them the exercise, socialization and love they crave. May 18, 2009 - 10:27 am Renee - This post brought tears to my eyes! I've always wanted to volunteer at a shelter but afraid my heart would be too weak for it. I can't stand to see animals in pain, but at the same time want to help them! I joke with my fiance that when we're old, we'll have a big farm and adopt all kinds of animals to fill our huge plot of land. Wouldn't that be lovely?! Thanks for posting such beautiful photos!
